*Pubs; Short for Public House, a term from our colonial past. You'll hear it used when someone asks if you'd "like to go down the pub for a quick drink?"
The Licensee of an hotel which can legally serve alcohol, is often referred to as the "Publican".
Motor Inns, Hotels (Pubs) and Hotel/Motels
In Australia and New Zealand, Motor Inns provide accommodation, and have a licensed restuarant/bar for guests, which may also open to the general public.
Hotel/Motels provide accommodation and meals, plus bar facilties. Hotels are licensed premises with at least one bar where liquor is served to the public without needing to buy a meal or be a guest. They are frequently referred to as *pubs.
Pubs are listed in Australian phone directories as hotels, but may not provide accommodation or a restuarant. All of the "Pubs" (Hotels) listed below do provide accommodation. Pubs which provide accommodation are generally clean, comfortable and easy on the budget. Most country pubs also do the renowned Aussie "counter lunch". Bet you can't finish it easily!
