Located on the Alstonville Plateau about half way between Lismore and Ballina, on the rich krasnosem soils which previously supported the "Big Scrub", Alstonville and Wollongbar are now communities of about 4000 with a thriving agricultural industry.  In addition to the more conventional dairy, beef and sheep farming; bananas, peanuts, macadamia nuts, pawpaws, pineapples and other exotic and subtropical fruits are now being successfully grown.

Motor Inns and a small B&B presence are the primary accommodations available.  Many visitors make the day trip to the plateau to take in the stunning views, and to visit popular local attractions like Summerland House with No Steps, which includes a restaurant, retail nursery, arts and crafts outlet and function centre.  One of Wollongbar's original homesteads, "Killarney" (circa 1900), has been renovated and transformed into a popular steakhouse, the "Bellowing Bull".

Self guided walks of the rainforest trees of the town are available, and close by Tucki Tucki Nature Reserve and Victoria Park Nature Reserve provide an insight into the diversity of the rainforests that once made up the "Big Scrub".

The Tropical Fruit Research Station, an extensive facility of the New South Wales Department of Agriculture is here, and the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) northern regional headquarters manages the wide variety of parks and reserves, including the World Heritage listed parks of the Border volcano group.
